I’ve been told it’s rare that everything in a wedding goes perfect; but when you have a bride as gorgeous as mine and family and friends who are unbelievably loving, perfection is no surprise. As long as I live, I’ll cherish the memories we made on Saturday as Paige and I said our vows before God and those who have raised and loved us into being. To everyone who made the sacrifice to spend their Saturday in celebration with us, know that I am eternally grateful for your support, generosity, and undying support of our marriage. And to Paige, my best friend and WIFE, a journey through this life with you by my side is the greatest reward a man could ever receive. All of your planning paid off big time, and thanks to you, we have a future that is brighter than I ever could have imagined. Today is an historic day. My all time favorite broadcaster, Marty Brennaman, turns off the microphone for the final time. As a kid, I realized early on that I’d never be good enough to compete as an athlete at a high level—heck, I had tee ball coaches in rec leagues that probably wanted to cut me. But I always loved the game of baseball—not playing it, but listening to it. And that was because of Joe and Marty. Marty and Joe were my soundtrack of summer. It was like having two extra grandpas from April to (hopefully) October. I’d run around the backyard with 700 WLW playing on the boom box, attempting to hide the fact that I was emulating and impersonating Marty’s voice on every single call. When I started announcing, it was Marty’s persona, humor, sharp wit, and eloquence that I tried to model most. And all those years later, no matter what event I host or game I call, I’m still that same little kid in the backyard trying my darndest to be Marty. I had the privilege of watching Marty in action in the booth when I was a broadcaster for the Hamilton Joes. In between innings, he was trying to show me something in his legendary scorebook and he invited me to sit on a stool next to him so I could get a better view of the master at work. After a few silent and uneventful plays, he just looked at me and said “Well, for a kid who is a broadcaster, you sure don’t say much!” And then he let out that famous Marty laugh. He had absolutely no idea how starstruck I was, and even though I’ve had a chance to work many events with him since that day, I’m still just as in awe of him as I was in that moment. There has never been a day in my entire life when Marty hasn’t been the voice of my beloved Cincinnati Reds until this Friday. He’s been steady and unchanging, and no matter what craziness goes on in the world, Marty has always been there for us. There will never be another broadcaster like Marty, and it breaks my heart to know that generations after me will never be able to experience the class, entertainment, and fun of a Reds broadcast with The Hall of Famer at the helm. #thanksmarty

This evening, I’ll join my family and many other suicide survivors at “A Walk to Remember,” a suicide support, awareness, and prevention event being held at the Voice of American Park in Mason at 6:30pm. Tonight, I’ll hold a candle honoring my Father; but I’ll see more than a flame. I’ll see a life unnecessarily cut short. In my next post at www.SeeyaBub.com/blog, I’ll reflect on how easy it was to ignore the epidemic of suicide until it ravaged my own family. Whether we know it or not, we live in a world where a death by suicide occurs every 12 minutes on average—but we need to do more than live in that world. We need to empathize with those who are hurting, and work to make sure that no one feels as if life is unlivable. My eyes have been wide open to this pain since losing my Father, and I hope yours will be, too. And for the final post on the Seeya Bub “10 You Need to Read” countdown, it’s only fitting that we go right back to where it all began—my very first post. The night that I decided to launch www.SeeyaBub.com, I sat at my desk and prayed that God would give me the strength and courage to share my story with the folks who needed to hear it most. I told myself that no matter how much work I would put in to write and share my Dad’s story, it would all be worth it if I made it to the other side of Eternity and found out that just one person was saved from suicide as a result of reading. Now, I’m almost three years from the launch date. I’ve published just shy of 250,000 words of my Dad’s story, and the blog has had more than 15,000 views—all thanks to those of you who read regularly and have loved my family through our grief. Thank you for always showing me such amazing compassion throughout this journey. The fact that you’re all helping to keep my Dad’s memory alive is a show of generosity that I’ll always cherish in the depths of my heart. Today’s Seeya Bub “10 You Need to Read” is one of my earliest posts and fondest memories of my Dad. My Dad was a natural athlete, and I was anything but; but that never prevented us from enjoying each other’s company as we played catch in the front yard of my childhood home. We laughed, shared stories, and made fun of my lack of athletic ability. Of all the things I miss about my Dad, it’s the simple moments like playing catch with him in the front yard that I miss most. #2 on the countdown is a story of a Father, a son, and a baseball that is near and dear to my heart, and I’ll always remember the pop of the glove on a warm summer evening.
